Tribute to the late Peter Walker Bond

Tribute to the late Peter Walker Bond who sadly died on the 11th November 2018.

Peter was born on the 2nd May 1932 at the Wheatsheaf Inn, Parkgate Road, Saughall, Chester: his parents Edward and Mabel were the licensees. He attended Thomas Wedge School and then Ellesmere College, where he became an excellent cricketer and went on to play for his school and Capenhurst.

He served his apprenticeship as an Electrical Engineer at Capenhurst and moved to Shotton Steelworks, then British Steel, as an Electrical Engineering Draughtsman. He worked in this capacity until his retirement.

Peter served in the RAF during his national service, working on Radar equipment.

The family moved to The Greyhound Inn, Saughall, right opposite The Swinging Gate pub. Here he met the love of his life, Elma Hannah Roberts in 1958. They married in All Saints Church, Saughall in 1959.They moved into the house, now known as Pinecone Cottage, on Sea Hill Road where they lived happily for the last 60 years.

They had three children, Mark, Debra and Gillian and five Grandchildren.

Peter was devoted to the Saughall community and gave his time freely within the village. In the 1960’s he was one of 4 trustees of the Vernon Institute, appointed as such by Sir Nigel Vernon who was Chairman of Trustees at that time.

He was also an active Parish Councillor for over 30 years, serving as Chairman for much of his term of office, He was also Chairman of the Cheshire Association of Parish Councils in the 1980’s. This culminated in an invitation from The Lord Chamberlain, on behalf of Her Majesty, for Peter and Elma to attend Buckingham Palace for a Garden Party.

Peter’s draughtsman skills were well used during this time. He not only created a detailed record of All Saints Church graveyard, and the Baptism Roll, but he also complied the Saughall & Shotwick Park Parish Paths map printed in 1999, which has been available for sale until recently. It is currently being updated and the new copy will be ready in 2019.

His funeral service and burial took place at All Saints Church, Saughall on Friday 23rd November 2018.

Peter will be missed and we all give thanks for his generosity of spirit. He has left quite a legacy. May he rest in peace.
