Saughall Gardening Club

New members welcome. Membership fee: £1 per family

Saughall Gardening Club meets in the main hall of the Vernon Institute at 7:30pm on the third Monday of each month. Visitors are welcome to attend the Club's events without being under any obligation to join.

This is a popular club and has more than 80 members.  The annual membership fee is currently £1 per family.  Members can obtain a 20% discount from Johnson’s Oaktree Nursery, Fiddlers Lane , on production of their membership card.

18th Feb.        Enjoying the Arctic , Dr. G Wynne

A popular speaker last year and we’re pleased to welcome him back with this new talk about the world’s most northern botanical garden!

 17th Mar.        Quiz Night

£2.50 tickets in advance from the Committee (or on the night, numbers permitting)

Prize for the winning team. Raffle and stand up bingo. Tea, coffee & light refreshments will be provided. You are welcome to bring your own wine or beer.

 21st Apr.         Close Encounters with British Wildlife, Margaret Sixsmith

Margaret is a natural history photographer whose images have won many awards. She is a member of the Friends of Hilbre and Wirral Wildlife Trust and she published a book about Hilbre Island in 2006.

 19th May         Food for Free, Jenny Hendy

Jenny has worked for the BBC, Gardeners’ World magazine and published a wide range of gardening books. Some of you may have come across her already as she helps to run the well-established Grosvenor Gardening School .

 16th June       Club Visit to Bluebell Cottage

 21st July        Gardening for Butterflies, Jan Miller

Jan Miller, North Wales branch organiser and education officer for Butterfly Conservation Wales will be talking to us about how we can make our gardens better habitats for butterflies and other beneficial insects.

 16th Aug.        Annual Flower and Produce Show

Entries welcome from members and non-members. Schedules should be available from May at Club meetings, from Committee members, and at Johnsons Nursery. More details below. Please note: there is no Monday meeting in August as this is replaced by the Show.

 15th Sep.        Autumn Baskets & Tubs, Andrew Johnson

In a change from his usual summer basket demonstration, we are pleased to welcome Andrew back in September to show us to get the most from our tubs and baskets in the autumn.

 20th Oct.         Winter Gardening, Dr John Dearden

 17th Nov.        Christmas Arrangements, Doreen Pritchard

We’re pleased to welcome back Doreen, to inspire us by demonstrating a variety of Christmas flower arrangements.

 19th Jan. 09   A.G.M. & Social

We take a brief look back at 2008 and deal with the necessary formalities, before looking forward to 2009, and celebrating the New Year with light refreshments and the Chairman’s legendary mulled wine. Bring your own plate and glass.

 Flower and Produce Show

Our Flower and Produce Show will be held this year on Saturday 16th August 2008. The show is open to everyone in the Parish, not just to Gardening Club members. There are a wide range of classes including cut flowers, vegetables, children's arrangements, pot plants and jams.  Most of the fruit and vegetables entered in the show are auctioned off at the end of the day, so come along if you would like to enjoy some locally grown produce. The Show is open to the public from 2 pm, so please come to see all the entries. The prizes are given out shortly before the Auction of Produce, which usually starts around 3 pm. For more information please contact the Secretary, details above.
